Venture Design Director | Nairobi, Kenya – Full Time

About the Factor[e] Venture Studio

Factor[e] Ventures is a global impact investment group with offices in Kenya, USA and UK, whose mission is to increase incomes and reduce the impact of climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa by building high-impact energy, agriculture, water, and mobility ventures. Over the next 10 years, we aim to build and invest in 100 new ventures with over $2B in follow-on investment to impact over 100M lives and to reduce carbon emissions by 1Gt.

The Factor[e] Venture Studio will build new companies from scratch and provide post-investment support to our growing portfolio. To do this, we are investing in diverse African and female co-founders. We ideate, launch, and scale new ventures from idea to exit, providing hands-on strategy and back office support to our venture teams as they scale.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Venture Designer to work closely with the leadership team to execute the venture studio strategy. The Venture Designer will report to a Partner, while supporting co-founders of a venture build in the studio, and will work closely with them through the venture building process, using rigorous, data driven insights to support co-founders to move towards pre-set targets and timelines. The Venture Designer will be involved in different stages of our process:

  • ● At the ‘ideation’ stage – (1) provide input into the problems we want to solve in your sector of expertise and help refine our theses based on your work and knowledge of the sector; (2) take co-founders through the Studio venture design process, supporting them along the way.

  • ● At the ‘pilot’ stage – (1) take co-founders through the Studio venture design process, supporting them along the way; (2) run pilots of promising ventures alongside the studio and co-founders

  • ● At the ‘build’ stage – provide ongoing support to co-founders in the studio, exploring their needs and matching them with studio resources as needed

For this role, we would like to identify experienced venture builders who have built companies, or teams, from idea to scale – either as entrepreneurs, or as intrapreneurs in companies. To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will have experience working in an entrepreneurial environment in Africa or other emerging markets, and be able to execute and manage multiple competing priorities. All Venture Studio team members must also be committed to a mission-driven, collaborative, open and high performing team culture.

This position will be based in the Factor[e] office in Nairobi, Kenya, and will work closely with our team and partners across Africa. Some domestic and pan-African travel may be required.

Responsibilities

As the Factor[e] Venture Studio is new, this role may change as the needs of the organization change. To begin, the Venture Designer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Venture Portfolio Management – Provide leadership to multiple agriculture or energy venture ideas as they go through the ideation and pilot phases in the studio:
    • – Build and curate a portfolio of ventures in a sector (energy, agriculture or mobility).
    • – Work with 2-4 ventures at a time supporting Co-Founders in their venture creation journey by being their primary point person in the venture studio to provide thought leadership, access to shared services, and brainstorming/troubleshooting support.
    • – For each problem we aim to solve in the venture studio, support the Ideation team to document and evaluate a range of solutions we could build ventures around. Sit on the ‘ideation’ sub-investment committee and support in decision making on what internally generated venture ideas are taken into pilot phase. Work closely with Co-Founders to select the best venture ideas to pilot.
    • – Manage studio-led pilots and support Co-Founders running pilots in the studio. Draft investment memos for consideration by the Venture Studio investment committee for studio-led venture concepts.
    • – Design small cohort venture design sprints and pilots. Manage these sprints with a limited number of Co-Founders, providing guidance on the Venture Studio process and ensuring that Co-founders successfully navigate all stages.
    • – Onboard Co-Founders on the venture building process and support them when preparing investment committee materials.
    • – Advise the Venture Studio investment committee on matters relating to venture ideas under development.
    • – Build a culture of collaboration, high performance and high velocity venture building work within the portfolio. Identify synergies between the ventures and also identify when ventures need to be killed.
  • Venture Building Support – Support venture co-founders as they go through the venture build process, after the studio has decided to make an investment
    • – Provide continued/ongoing support to Co-Founders and their ventures in multiple ways as they go through the venture build phase, enabling them to succeed by matching them with resources within the Factor[e] ecosystem (such as in prototyping and rapid iteration, commercial strategy, corporate finance, and talent)
    • – Become an expert in Factor[e]’s Venture Studio Human Centered Design and venture building processes, applying our process and tools and training Co-Founders and their teams.
    • – Support Co-Founders in maintaining high velocity throughout the venture building process, with an emphasis of rapid learning and iteration.
    • – Support Co-Founders by providing review and input on project plans and IC materials.
    • – Serve as a thought partner to Co-Founders in order to help drive strategic decision making.
    • – Fill in for temporarily-missing roles on venture build teams, providing dynamic and nimble support as needed and based on your functional areas of expertise.
  • Help Design & Continuously Improve the Studio Venture Building Process – Provide ongoing strategic support to founders and their teams:
    • – Consolidate learnings from the ongoing venture design process and incorporate these learnings into core venture studio materials.
    • – Continually analyze the venture building process in order to identify opportunities to improve.
    • – Conduct webinars and training for Co-Founders and companies both within the studio and to the broader ecosystem.

Qualifications & Experience

  • ● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • ● A passion for our mission and experience working in an entrepreneurial environment in Africa; experience with venture studios is a plus.
  • ● 5+ years of experience in a fast-growing start-up with responsibility for product design or another key strategic area.

  • ● Positive, encouraging, collaborative attitude.
  • ● Experience in energy or agriculture is preferred

Full-Stack Engineer | Remote – Full Time | 6 Month Contract

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Full Stack Engineer to work directly with one of our studio ventures as they enter a rapid prototyping and building phase. The selected candidate will be responsible for rapidly developing a functioning prototype capable of onboarding the first 5-10 customers for the new venture. The role will report directly to one of the Co-Founders of the project and work closely with both Co-Founders, the studio team, and an external engineering team in an agile environment focused on delivering working software on a weekly basis. This position will be remote. There’s a need to be flexible in work hours (within reason) to align with a global team based in California and the UK. There is a chance that 1-2 pan-African trips may be required including to the Factor[e] studio offices in Nairobi.

About the Venture

Factor(e) previously supported a company called Odyssey that has successfully facilitated over $1 billion in financing to off-grid energy providers. Odyssey offers an end-to-end investment and asset management platform for distributed energy infrastructure. It does this by providing streamlined and automated data collection and analysis to support energy providers and financiers through the process of submitting proposals for funding, due diligence, and performance monitoring.

Factor(e) is again working with Odyssey to expand their tools and services to water financing to accelerate the financing needed to achieve SDG6. This platform will enable financiers to streamline their discovery, diligence and tracking of investments. In doing so it will address the identified constraints of finding sufficient pipelines of investable water service providers and creating standardized metrics to evaluate and monitor their performance. This should expedite funds already committed for water services, while lowering the barrier to entry for new financiers to water services.

Our market research has confirmed the need for this tool and service and informed our product specifications. We are now beginning to rapidly build an MVP for testing with our first client and generating further feedback from our next client. The tool will ultimately support water service financing in markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Responsibilities

  • Recommend, agree on and implement the tech stack for development of the application prototype
  • Develop features and functionality for the application to support an MVP launch of the venture build
  • Collaborate with co-founders on a weekly sprint cycle with daily stand-ups to ensure rapid, iterative and customer focused delivery.
  • Collaborate with external development teams for style-guidelines, code-review and input on key architectural decisions.
  • Create and maintain documentation pertaining to systems design and environment set-up for team onboarding and integration purposes.
  • Participate in feedback sessions with external software testers (e.g. potential pilot clients)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years experience, at least partially in a fast-paced startup environment with significant individual responsibility
  • Expert in one or more server-side language (Java, Python preferred)
  • Experience working with Javascript and backend / frontend frameworks (Node, Express, Angular, JQuery)
  • Comfort architecting software per modern software design patterns (MVP, MVC design patterns, Service Orientated Architecture)
  • Database administration and data management skills (RDBMS and preferably also NoSQL)
  • Prior experience with software design for testability (white-box, unit testing)
  • Experience with Agile software development practices
  • Experience with git and GitHub based source code management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • A passion for working on high-impact projects that are focused on improving quality of life in developing countries

Opportunity to build companies from idea to exit in new start-up studio in Africa About the Factor[e] Venture Studio

Our mission is to build high-impact energy, agriculture and mobility ventures that are addressing some of Sub-Saharan Africa’s greatest income inequality and climate challenges. We ideate, launch, and scale new ventures from idea to exit with exceptional co-founders, intrapreneurs, business leaders and operators close to the customer on the ground in Africa. A dedicated venture studio team provides hands-on strategy and back-office support to our venture teams as they scale. The Studio will not incubate or accelerate existing companies, but rather will use a unique venture-building process to identify business opportunities internally, test solutions in the market with real customers, and build diverse teams of co-founders to take the most promising ventures from ideas to exit.

The Factor[e] Venture Studio is based in Kenya and we will open a second office in West Africa soon so we can be close to the customers, companies, and markets we serve across Africa. We are currently building our first two ventures and we are recruiting new co-Founders to build our next energy and agriculture ventures.

We believe that diverse teams will build more scalable ventures and thus we aim to build teams with >60% African and >50% female leaders, so entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, leaders, and operators of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Co-Founders will have access to 1 to 2 years of seed capital investment, studio support and other benefits to build a company. If successful, venture teams will receive support to raise growth capital to spin out their ventures and scale.

To date, Factor[e] has built a portfolio of 23 scalable, high-impact technology ventures in these sectors in Africa and India and these companies have gone on to raise more than $300M in capital. We aim to build and invest in 100 new ventures with over $2B in follow-on investment that together impact over 100M lives and reduce emissions by 1Gt in the next 10 years.

The Opportunity to Co-Found a Venture

Are you passionate about building new and exciting ventures that solve Africa’s greatest income inequality and climate challenges? Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment, where you gain a tremendous amount of responsibility and accountability? Do you want to be part of an exceptional entrepreneurial team with highly motivated and driven people? If so, you may be a great Venture Co-Founder in our new start-up studio.

The Co-Founder will co-found businesses within the Venture Studio by taking venture ideas and technologies through a human-centered design and lean startup process to iteratively validate and grow the best new business opportunities. Successful Venture Co-Founders will have the opportunity to lead and grow ventures that spin out of the studio.

This opportunity will be initially based in the Factor[e] Venture Studio in Nairobi, Kenya. Some domestic and international travel may be required and re-location may be required in the future if your venture expands to other markets in Africa.

Traits of Ideal Co-Founders

  • Approx 10+ years of work experience and 5+ years of leadership experience including budget ownership
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial experience building something significant from scratch
  • Willingness and ability to live and work close to the customer in Kenya

How We will Support You

We know that many exceptional entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, leaders and operators in Africa want to build new ventures from the ground up. But many lack access to venture capital, talent or the support they need to do this successfully at scale.
