

Meeting Zero Hunger goals in Africa demands a more productive agricultural sector. That requires fertilizers that are affordable, accessible, and sustainably produced for the continent’s farmers. Localizing green agrochemical value chains offers a path to achieving all three.
Africa employs an agricultural workforce 10 times larger than the United States, yet its farms are only one-sixth as productive. As a result, 77% of agricultural workers earn less than $2.15 per day. Limited access to affordable fertilizer is a major driver of this gap.
In the US, agricultural productivity has risen alongside widespread fertilizer adoption. Across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), however, productivity has remained largely stagnant, while fertilizer application rates track among the lowest in the world. Smallholder farmers consistently cite cost as the principal barrier.
