Portfolio Services Manager/Director | Nairobi, Kenya – Full Time

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Portfolio Services Manager/Director to join our team, managing a broad range of post-investment support. To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will have experience working with entrepreneurs, investors, donors, and startup teams. He or she will bring strong interpersonal, managerial, communication and organization skills. Most importantly, this candidate will demonstrate humility, ownership, and a drive to produce results.


Factor[e] and Equator envision a post investment support function that is a globally recognized part of our brand and value proposition. We need the right leader to make this a reality! Currently, we offer a wide range of support to our ventures (recruiting talent, strategic advising, peer networking, pitching & fundraising, etc.). This support is delivered by our investment team, select partners (consultants, PR firms, etc.) and the post investment support team itself.


More specifically, the Portfolio Services Manager/Director will be responsible for understanding the needs of our portfolio companies, creating a strategy to provide effective support, and coordinating these activities. This leader will be expected to develop deep, authentic relationships with company leaders that can be leveraged to understand their needs and deliver support that creates substantive value for companies. We expect this role to lead reporting on company performance, overall health of the portfolio evaluations, and communications that feature company work in Factor[e] and Equator materials. We need someone willing to serve companies individually while also developing the tools and systems to make this support replicable and scaleable. Ultimately, if successful in this role, you will drive success in Factor[e] and Equator portfolio companies leading to profitable and impactful exits.

This position will be based in the Factor[e] and Equator offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and will work closely with our global offices, partners, investors and portfolio companies around the world. Some domestic and international travel may be required.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • • Set a clear vision and scope of work for Factor[e] & Equator post investment support services.
  • • Own and drive results pertaining to post investment support goals. Ultimately this work needs to create value for portfolio companies that enable them achieve milestones and successfully scale.
  • • Develop and manage the content for our post-investment toolkit and curriculum.
  • • Build genuine relationships with Factor[e] and Equator portfolio companies. This is critical to provide a positive portfolio experience, to understand company venture building needs and to develop the trust required for our support to meaningfully land and produce results.
  • • Lead and manage new portfolio company onboarding with support tailored to company design points.
  • • Build and manage a network of relationships with team members, consultants, and partners that we can draw on to mentor and provide targeted support to companies spanning a wide array of needs.
  • • Organize events and innovative ways for the portfolio companies to connect, learn from each other, collaborate, and connect with partners.
  • • Report on platform performance to executive team and investment directors regularly and contribute to published reports including Factor[e] donor required reporting, Factor[e] Annual Impact report, and Equator biannual and quarterly reports.
  • • Run an annual evaluation process with portfolio companies to measure the impact of our post-investment services and update our support strategy based on the findings.
  • • Lead collaboration with Factor[e] and Equator investment teams and deal managers to ensure our support to companies is aligned internally.
  • • Manage Post Investment Support Analyst to ensure effective delivery of her work and ongoing professional development.
  • • Serve as a company representative at conferences, panels, and industry events.

Qualifications:

  • • 8+ years of experience in operations or portfolio support.
  • • Experience in a fast-growing company in Africa.
  • • Experience in an entrepreneurial environment such as an incubator, accelerator, a start-up company, or an investment firm.
  • • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including a global team, portfolio company executives, investors, donors, external partners, and other collaborators.
  • • Must be independent in your workstyle, comfortable self-managing multiple priorities and partners. concurrently, thrive in the face of ambiguity, and be motivated to drive projects forward.
  • • Outstanding verbal, written, visual communication and presentation skills.
  • • Experience analyzing data and/or using data to inform strategy and decision making.
  • Positive, encouraging, collaborative attitude.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams.
  • Comfortable switching between working autonomously and in groups depending on the task.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business administration or related field.
